An audio device may be defined as any device or functions embedded in composite devices that are used to manipulate audio, voice or sound-related functionality. It includes audio data (analog or digital) and the functionality used to control the audio environment such as volume and tone controls. Audio devices are instruments that allow you to listen to sounds; they are therefore a significant part of the world of music.
Audio Output/Input Device
An audio input device records music and voice input into the computer. Examples of input devices are CD-Rom players and microphones. Audio output devices include microphones, speakers, headsets and music players.
Computer Audio Device
A sound or audio card is a computer expansion card that facilitates the input and output of sounds to and from a computer. These cards provide the audio component for multimedia applications such as music composition, editing video or audio, presentation, education, and game. Some computers will have their own sound capabilities, but there are others that require additional expansion cards.
There are USB audio devices and software that can be used with a PC. USB audio devices can improve the computer’s sound quality and volume without the hassle of extra power connections or bulky devices. Audio device software enhances the capabilities of an audio device in recording, editing and publishing audio on the PC.
Audio Device Driver
Audio device drivers allow an audio device to interact with the computer. When an audio device is not properly detected by the computer a “no audio device error” message will be displayed on the screen. At this point only the internal speakers on the computer may provide some audio sounds. The most common cause of a “no audio device error” message is the incorrect installation of an audio device driver. A check should be done to ensure the device driver installed matches the particular device connected. Other troubleshooting steps are checking for loose or incorrect connections and checking the computer’s BIOS to see if the audio is set to auto mode.
Steps to Resolving “No Audio Device Error”
- Check the BIOS Settings – Reboot the computer and enter the BIOS setup program using the function key as specified in the computer’s user guide. Look for the audio mode and check if it’s on auto. If not, turn it to auto and save changes.
- Update Audio Driver – The device driver on the computer may not be compatible with the device hardware. Ensure you are using the newest device driver for the hardware. Consult the device’s manufacturer for assistance in getting the latest driver.
- Reinstall the Device – Improper installation or incorrect or loose cable connections can cause the “no audio device error”. Check the cables and reinstall the device.
- Check if Device is Working – Remove the device and connect it to another computer. If the same error appears, then it means the device is defective.
